Leaky gut is a phenomenon when your gut lining is irritated and allows larger molecules of food to get across into the blood stream to create inflammatory reactions.
Leaky gut happens due to…
- stress
- extreme or prolonged exercise (think marathon training or multiple hour long hiking/biking treks for days)
- decreased estradiol
- consumption of antibiotics
- regular consumption of pain relievers
- pregnancy
- chemical pollutants in your diet, air, water and cooking utensils
Living on this earth at this time sets you up for leaky gut.
The good news is there are many ways to support your gut lining from food to supplements.
My go-to’s for healing the gut lining:
- L-glutamine powder – 3-5 grams a day
- Tributyrin X – Healthy Gut Company

Paired with one of the following:
- Prickly pear powder – depends on the brand dosing
- Nopal cactus – 1/2 to 1 cup a day
- Aloe vera juice/gel – 2 capfuls a day
Paired with one of the following probiotics:
- Seed probiotic
- Natren Healthy Trinity
- Megasporebiotic (if you have diarrhea or loose bowels)
- Therbiotic complete by Klaire Labs
If you have the sensation of food sitting in the stomach and not moving then I’ll recommend a digestive enzyme with stomach acid called HCL Guard by Healthygut.
Now if food feels like it’s not moving through your intestines I’ll add Holozymes by Healthy Gut or Masszymes by BiOptimizers.
Pair this with a whole foods closest to nature diet where you sit down, undistracted and chew your food 20-25 times per bit at least and you will see improvement.
If things aren’t 100% and you find you’re still reacting to certain foods then consider colostrum to re-build the immunity of your gut.
I like MegaIgG 2000 by Microbiome labs or SBI protect by Orthomolecular for this as they are non-dairy versions of colostrum.
Yes, colostrum the stuff from Mom’s milk, but since you can’t go back there and many react to goat and cow colostrum these days it’s best to go synthetic here if you’re super sensitive.
The old school naturopathic fave is Mt. Capra Goat Colostrum – used by NDs around the world for decades.
Can you heal a leaky gut with out all the supplements?
You sure can!
The no supplement gut repair protocol:
- Grass fed butter or Ghee – 2 tbsp a day give butyrate fuel for the gut lining
- Bone broth or bone broth based soups – 2 cups a day gives the amino acids like glutamine and more
- Prickly pear cactus or nopales – 1/2 cup to 1 cup daily
- Unpasturized fermented foods – ex: Kimchi, sauerkraut, pickles – start with 1 tbsp 3x a day and work up to 1/4 cup 3x a day
Do this for three months solid and continue having these foods on a regular basis going forward.
If you’re experiencing acne, eczema, psoriasis, skin irritation of any kind and have been for years you may need up to a year or more of gut lining support.
I often use the supplement protocol to speed the lining process up a bit however I’ve see the no supplement protocol work in those with mild to moderate symptoms in a month or two.
Can you do a gut lining repair on a quarterly basis for a month?
Absolutely!
