Last week I learned the true value of taking time off alone.
Sure I get a lot of alone time in the car driving to and from my office in Wisconsin and my Dad’s house a few times a month but I’m usually talking to patients, catching up on phone calls or listening to podcasts.
Driving isn’t my vision of a deeply relaxing activity but my hour up to the Northwoods of Wisconsin and back twice a week is beautiful and isn’t stressful.
The main traffic I encounter are turkeys, foxes and deer crossing the road with the occasional eagle or hawk soaring high above me.
It is beautiful and comes with a special type of reflection.
Yet, being alone, doing nothing or exploring on your own takes the self connection to a deeper level.
Really taking inventory of the voices in your head and exploring them deeper is fascinating.
What’s better than that is getting to a point of not thinking at all and just being instead.
It’s been a long time since I’ve felt connected to myself, most of the time I feel like I’m floating above myself watching my life happen.
Not as an active participant but as an observer as if my life is a movie I’m watching unfold.
This week I was able to step back into my body and feel all the emotions course through me as I went about exploring and chilling in the spas.
This week I shared about my 1:1 experience with Dr. Brianne Grogan and I can’t tell you how important it was for me to be alone after that session.
It gave me time to process and put all my energy into myself vs have to share it with someone else.
While that may sound selfish, the truth is, you need selfish alone time to process life and explore deeper possibilities for yourself.
You may be thinking what does a self retreat have to do with hormones, slowing aging or inflammation.
I’ll tell you everything.
I’m convinced inflammation starts in the brain and if it’s loaded with negative low vibe toxic thoughts of overwhelm and stress you’ll have a hard time making good choices when it comes to your health and longevity.
Taking time a few times a year to get away by yourself, even if it’s for a day, is crucial to quiet the noise around you so that you can turn in and hear what your body has to say.
You are your own best healer and your insights are incredibly valuable if you slow down to listen.
Here’s to aging well one insight at a time,
Dr. J
