I once heard humans spend 15 years of their life on average watching TV. That’s insane and a lot of time wasted! My Mom only let me watch Mr. Rodgers, a little Sesame Street and Richard Simmons workouts. It was a really big deal if I was allowed to watch Magnum PI or Dallas. Growing up this way wired me to not think about TV as entertainment. To this day I don’t know how to turn on my TV and it’s 3 remotes that need to be dialed in to make it work. My husband thinks I’m weird. Based on what I hear from those who still watch the news, I’m glad TV isn’t my thing. But here’s the thing – watching TV contributes to decreased mobility and circulation because most of the time folks are just sitting or lying down watching. What if you turned that nightly nervous system stimulating routine into a body work session? You could still watch TV if you really wanted to but make it productive for your body instead. Unless you’re extremely lucky it’s likely you don’t have a massage therapist to work on you daily let alone weekly. The weeks, months and years that pass between your body treatments cause a back log of stored “stuff” to build up in your muscles, joints, tendons and ligaments. Taking 5-10 minutes a day to foam roll, massage, gua sha, cup, intuitively move or all of the above is a great way to wind down your day and prepare your body for bed. Pair it with a circulation boosting essential oil, magnesium and red light therapy and you have a well rounded protocol. That leaves you feeling good and more mobile vs the adrenaline surge with the nightly news or the latest episode of gruesome murders on Dateline. Finding your tight spots and taking time in silence to explore what the body has to tell you about those spots is a game changer when it comes to sleuthing out what’s stressing you out. Your body is talking daily. Are you listening? Self bodywork is a great tool to explore and learn more about what your body wants to help you age well. Check out this video of my nightly routine. Here’s to inspiring you to ditch your TV, Dr. J
