Symptoms, food, feelings and just about anything in life always seem to get tossed into the “good” or “bad” bucket.
Last week, a friend texted me a picture of her swollen ankle, worried it might be a side effect of the 21-day detox she’d just started.
My first thought?
Considering her 4-year history of ankle swelling and a recent vein procedure, “Yikes, no…that’s bad.”
But when I paused, calmed my nervous system, and looked closer, I realized something:
Her ankle wasn’t bad. It was information.
It was her body’s barometer, a gauge for what was happening inside.
We all have one.
For some, it’s migraines.
For others, low back pain, rashes, gut flare-ups.
Conventional medicine would slap on labels: stress headaches, eczema, IBS.
And naturally, we think: “Oh no. This is bad.”
But what if these symptoms weren’t punishments?
What if they were signals?
What if your body was speaking to you?
Here’s the problem: we’ve been taught that any symptom = something to silence.
Mainstream medicine has a pill for almost most every problem.
Functional and natural medicine too often falls into the trap of offering “natural” band-aids for every symptom instead.
I’ve been guilty of it too. But here’s what I’ve realized:
There’s a fine line between supporting a symptom short-term while your body heals…and covering it up so long that you miss the deeper message.
That’s where modern medicine fails women.
Especially in the chronic, day-to-day stuff:
- Missing dinner with friends because your gut is a mess
- Skipping the dress you love because of your skin
- Leaving work early with headaches or swelling
These “everyday” symptoms chip away at your health, your joy, your finances, and even your confidence.
Your body isn’t betraying you, it’s trying to get your attention.
