1 in 3 women under 50 are caring for children and parents in the US right now.
Every day in the office, many women tell me they come last when it comes to their health needs, yet they are here to see me to try to improve their health.
I know when someone is in that state, they will not get results unless they fully understand the value of prioritizing themselves to help others.
1 in 5 caregivers develop chronic health conditions during the process of caring for a loved one, and 1 in 4 are providing complex care over 40 hours a week with no training, with an average financial burden of $7,200 annually on top of that, according to the AARP findings.
This is unacceptable and not something I want for anyone in my circle!
So what do you do to find the balance?
Get support!
My podcast guest and friend, Alicia Ayala, is on a mission to show you there is a way to prioritize all aspects of your life and not lose yourself in the process.
Alicia is a former Senior Director in a wellness company turned transformational life and leadership coach who helps women find the sweet spot to be the career woman and still take care of the family.
She’s helped women no longer feel like they have to choose, but instead develop a different way of leading themselves in their lives.
While Alicia is focused on balancing career and family, the same concepts apply to those of us in the parent caregiving role as well.
Speaking of caregiving, my dad’s 90th surprise birthday is Friday, he gets inducted into the Badger Midget Racing Hall of Fame on Sunday, and his real birthday is Monday.
I can’t wait to celebrate this big one with him!
We just found out he has severe aortic stenosis, and he’s not sure he wants to do the surgery to correct it due to the risk-benefit ratio.
The survival rate once it’s diagnosed is 1-2 years without surgery, and with the surgery, it’s 3-5 years.
He has mild symptoms at the moment and is convinced he and I can come up with a plan to keep him going. No pressure at all there!
Either way, you only turn 90 once, so this weekend is going to be a biggie for him and me!
I share this because I don’t know what the next few years will bring, and I want to make sure I’m here for all of you, and him, without compromising my health!
So if you’re not putting yourself first, or know you haven’t been great at it in the past, know I’m getting some support, and I hope this email will get you thinking about it too!
Here’s to prioritizing you,
Dr. J
