I’m more afraid of being old and sick than dying, so I gather as much information as I can on aging well.
And even I get torn between conflicting information and end up down deep rabbit holes trying to figure out what’s legit.
But here’s the thing… information is useless unless you put it to the test for a set period of time.
Not a day or a week, then claim it didn’t work.
From seeing thousands of patients at this point, it seems 60–90 days is a solid timeframe to determine if something is going to work for you.
Before you start thinking, “Doc?! I want to feel better now!”
Well, it took you some time to get to this point. Barring a miracle (which, believe me, can happen), it’s going to take time to undo, balance, or reset whatever is off.
I’m guilty of pulling patients off protocols too fast because of the need to get results ASAP.
When it comes to the symptoms of midlife and aging that have slowly been creeping up on you, it’s worth taking your time to create a proper health experiment.
Obviously, if you have acute symptoms that are life-threatening or severely impeding your quality of life, this requires quick action. That’s not what I’m talking about here.
If I’ve learned anything in the last 19+ years of practice, it’s that everyone brings a unique set of variables to work with when it comes to their health.
The term “practicing medicine” might be better posed as “experimenting with medicine.”
I used to cringe at the thought of the term “experimenting” because I’ve been programmed to think an experiment is something you do before you present it to your patients.
Or, as the cool kids say, it’s not “evidence-based medicine.”
Truth is, you and I are all experimenting all the time.
Each time you try something new, it’s an experiment, but what’s missing is the collection of evidence on your end.
You don’t need a research study to collect your own “evidence-based medicine”!
The term “evidence-based medicine” is the “standard” that all doctors are supposed to practice by. Well, look at the medical system. How’s that cookie-cutter “evidence-based” approach working out for you?
Collect your own evidence.
This will end podcast binges, doom scrolling, and all the other confusion out there.
End the battle with your ego of wanting quick results.
Choose to seek information from yourself instead of relying on others’ opinions of supplements, protocols, programs, and gurus.
You can be your own best doctor with some guidance.
Here’s how to create your own health experiment:
- Choose the one area of your life that you want to focus on (just one, not many) and give it 90 days.
- Determine what variables you’re going to change. Ex: diet, habits, supplements, hormones, etc.
- Find a way to track your progress. Ex: scale, blood pressure, wearable device, note-taking, labs.
- Review your progress weekly and make adjustments every 4 weeks if you’re not getting results.
With so many apps and wearable data out there these days, it’s easy to evaluate your health experiment.
Yes, you could ask AI to help design the entire thing for you.
Why not use your own brain and not give your power away to AI? Figure this out for yourself.
I’m happy to weigh in and help out by asking you questions to coach you toward the ideal test for yourself.
In the next 6 months, it appears there are going to be some shake-ups when it comes to peptides, hormones, and thyroid medications due to changing regulations.
Now is a great time to look at the variables in your life that may impact the health of your thyroid, hormones, and the conductor of the body’s symphony: the nervous system and adrenal glands.
I’ll be talking more about this on Thursday. Stay tuned!
Here’s to taking back your health on your terms,
Dr. J
