A fascinating study from the Health and Retirement Study analyzed data from over 90,000 people and discovered something remarkable: volunteering doesn’t just make the world better—it makes YOU better too! The research found that people who volunteer regularly reported:Better overall healthFewer depressive symptomsEnhanced wellbeing But here’s the truly interesting part—if you’re not swimming in cash, volunteering might benefit you EVEN MORE than your wealthier counterparts! The study found that those in lower wealth brackets experienced significantly better health improvements from volunteering. WHY NOT ME-TIME INSTEAD?I know what you’re thinking: “Between work, family obligations, and trying to remember if I’ve already watched that Netflix show, where would I find time to volunteer?” But here’s the paradox: giving your time might actually give you MORE life in return! And not just more years—better ones too. READY TO TEST THE THEORY?Start small! Just 2-3 hours a week at your local:Animal shelter (puppy cuddles = instant mood boost)Food bank (sorting cans counts as arm day!)Community garden (plants don’t talk back!)Library (shushing people is surprisingly satisfying – at least my librarian friends swear by it)Local parks & trails (great if you’re like me and love a rewarding workout) Remember: this isn’t just about being noble—it’s about being strategic with your health investment! Think of volunteering as a component of your wellness prescription, with side effects of purpose, connection, and possibly a cute volunteer coordinator (if you’re in the market…). I’ve had a bunch of volunteering gigs over the years and by far my fave has been hanging out with trail clean up crews or community clean up days – think movement and you see results afterwards! Most towns or parks have clean up days – check out your local websites. Spring season is prime time for community outdoor clean up days.  You never know – you may meet some really amazing folks & have a lot of fun while getting in a little movement too! Here’s to living our best, longest, most fabulous lives,Dr J P.S. I’m curious – what’s been your favorite volunteering gig so far?  Hit reply and let me know. I’d love to share what you all are up to.  Who knows – you may inspire someone to join in!
