Remember when a foot rub just meant someone owed you big time? 😏 Turns out, the nervous system reflexology benefits of touch are a superpower you can use to soothe your nervous system and your family members too! Sure there are Asian reflexology point maps for your feet and hands showing connections to organs, the brain and spine BUT what if you didn’t have to be specific? Let’s take my Golden Retriever Bryan for example…he requests belly rubs all the time and he’s taught my cat Sam to do the same. Bryan and Sam are not like – “hey rub here at this spot and hold for 30 seconds it’s good for my liver”. I do wonder what that magic spot is in Bryan that sends his leg spinning like twitchy helicopter thing. Sam the cat doesn’t seem to have a spot like that, but he does have one that flips the switch from purrs to playful love bites and claws in a heartbeat. If you’re like me – there are specific spots on my hands and feet that I enjoy rubbing more than others…could those be the spots I need more TLC in the connected organs? Maybe. Funny how we started handing out certificates, degrees, and white coats—and somewhere along the way, convinced ourselves we couldn’t rub our own feet or calm our nervous system without an appointment. Don’t get me wrong, I love a good expert… but maybe it’s time we bring a little DIY back to the basics of feeling good. Ponder the following…What if holding someone’s hand or a gentle touch on the back of the hand could make a huge difference in calming the nervous system when someone is fired up or anxious? “Hey how about a hug?” (my favorite line from the movie Dumb & Dumber) Hugs are one of my favorite nervous system calmers out there. This week on the Health Fix Podcast, I sat down with reflexology queen Njideka Olatunde to talk about how touch is the missing piece in our health, hormone and longevity puzzle. She’s a reflexologist but isn’t adhering to the traditional training – she’s teaching families in the rough parts of D.C. how to use touch to diffuse stressful situations. Here’s what we cover:Why pain and stress are messy roommates (and how a little touch can kick them out 🦶🚪).How reflexology is the DIY healing power of touch kit nobody told you about. Why kids, partners, and yes YOU need more touch (and less screen time + stress time). How your body is practically begging you to listen to it — and it’s not that complicated, promise.Spoiler Alert: Healing doesn’t always have to mean another pill, another appointment, or another “fix.” Sometimes it’s as simple as reconnecting — with yourself and the people you love. Keep in mind...pain is not just physical — it’s emotional too. In my 18 years of being an acupuncturist I’ve found touch can be a powerful antidote to pain – you don’t even have to touch the area of pain. Your body is your best healer — it just needs a little nudge.Where are you drawn to give a yourself a little massage? Go for it right now. 🎧 Ready to tap into your hidden healing powers? 👉 Catch the episode by clicking the link below. Bonus: You might even get your kids to put their phones down for five minutes. A win-win if you ask me. 😉 Here’s to your nervous system health, Dr. Jannine Krause P.S. Don’t be surprised if after this, your whole family starts begging for foot rubs… consider yourself warned! |
