Hormone “optimization” is becoming a social media obsession—and honestly, it makes me sick. Hormones are being thrown at every woman and man over 40 like they’re candy. I get it. The promise of more energy, better moods, better sleep, fewer hot flashes, stronger muscles—it’s tempting. It’s also risky. I’m the doctor women and men come to when this stuff backfires. After 18 years working with hormones, here’s what I’ve learned (the hard way): 👉 If you don’t address your nervous system, lymphatic drainage, and detox pathways first—or at least alongside hormones—your protocol might blow up in your face. This week on the podcast, I sat down with Paula Rastrick—a firecracker of a hormone advocate who knows what it’s like to feel wrecked by “hormone balancing.” She’s real, and she’s been through it. (More on her in tomorrow’s email!) But what lit a fire under me for this email was a text from someone close. Her doctor recommended birth control plus testosterone pellets to “optimize” her hormones. No severe symptoms. Just irregular periods in her mid-40s. AKA: common symptoms for peri-menopause that weren’t majorly interfering with her life. Birth control shuts down the natural cycle. Testosterone pellets? Often touted as magic for libido, energy, and muscle tone—but they’re being handed out like candy, too. No testing. No detox support. No context. I’ve used testosterone in cases—with extreme fatigue and clear lab data to back it. But the side effects? 😬 Acne 😬 Hair loss 😬 Insomnia 😬 Blood sugar spikes Here’s the truth: ✨ Hormone therapy is not bad. ❌ But it’s not a magic bullet. If you’re not detoxing well—or your nervous system is fried—hormones can make you feel worse. The big hormone gurus are saying bioidentical HRT is 100% safe. I disagree. It can be safe—but only if your body is ready and your provider knows how to assess that. Environmental toxins, hormone-disrupting chemicals, processed foods, chronic stress—these all clog your ability to handle hormones. Without addressing this, you’re rolling the dice. I’ve seen it time and again: men and women feel worse, anxious, wired, depressed, or have panic attacks—then get dismissed as “too sensitive.” That’s not okay. That’s exactly why I created my new program. It’s called Vitality Sleuth, and it helps you uncover what your body actually needs before jumping into hormone therapy. I’m still looking for a few founding members to test it out before the public launch. If you want to be one of the first to get access, click the orange button below to join the waitlist. Hormone health starts with your whole body. You deserve more than one-size-fits-all protocols and false promises. Here’s to your total body health,Dr. Jannine Krause |
