As you sleep your brain is removing wastes and toxins from itself and the nervous system. New research indicates photobiomodulation aka red light therapy performed before sleep can help in this process. A few months ago I was approached by the red light therapy company Kineon to test out their Move+ device. (Short on time? You can skip the email and click the orange button at the bottom to see the device and my summary) I was intrigued by the device due to it’s combination of red light and low level laser therapy combination packaged into small targeted lights. Being an acupuncturist I was really excited to try it out because I could put this device over specific acupuncture points and target them. Turns out I was up to something even more intriguing after talking to Kineon co-founder and CEO Forrest Smith on my most recent podcast, episode 554 (click HERE to listen in). I’ve been using the Kineon on a vagus nerve point just behind the ears—commonly used for calming and better sleep. Turns out, this area may also support glymphatic drainage and brain detox. I believe one of the most overlooked aspects of aging is what your body is up to when you sleep. Due to weight gain, inflamed thyroids and increased food sensitivities as well as environmental allergies that show up during the hormonal shifts in peri menopause and beyond it’s common for women to have cognitive issues show up. Many women swear they have developed ADHD as they get older but what if it’s more an issue with a tight neck paired with inflamed neck tissue that’s keeping their brain from draining toxins? Combine that with the 2-4a wake ups due to wacky hormones and possibly some snoring due to the neck being inflamed and you have double trouble. Diving further into the brain on red light therapy I learned that even placing red light on the thyroid could do wonders for decreasing inflammation and helping the brain drain! How cool is that? Since I’ve had the device I’ve been putting it on myself and any person that is open to trying it out in my office! Almost every one has noted how good their neck feels “different” after the device and most say they slept better that night too. Could this red light therapy and low level laser device help sleep apnea? Possibly. I searched for quality research on this subject yet only found a Brazilian study that was in progress since 2020…so I guess we’ll wait and see here OR you can try it out for yourself. Either way, I’m a huge fan of red light therapy and have been for over a decade. It’s worked wonders for my chronic back pain and helped eliminate knee pain my husband suffered from for years after he was hit by a truck on his bike. Of all my red light devices, the Kineon Move+ is my go-to for neck, thyroid, and knee support—it’s great for targeting pain and acupuncture points. I love it so much I’m using it daily on acupuncture points in my office in Wisconsin. If you’ve been intrigued by red light therapy and are wondering how it can help you – geek out with Forrest Smith of Kineon and I on my most recent podcast. We dive into brain health, using the device for vagus nerve support and even calming inflammation in the neck with allergies and thyroid issues. Anytime I can target pain and inflammation without pills I’m in and this device is working well for small hard to address areas as well as enhancing effect of acupuncture points.
