HHello! I always thought Yoga Nidra was a different version of the gentle poses like in yin yoga. Till I met Kelly Smith and she gifted me a recording for me to test out before our podcast dropped. I was intrigued as Kelly described Yoga Nidra as a meditation where the body goes to sleep but your subconscious mind stays awake.
The first listen I fell deep asleep in my cozy exit row window seat 16A – my fave spot – best views of Mt. Ranier on the way into Seattle. I was jolted awake, dry mouth and all when I heard my voice talking in another podcast. The poor woman sitting next to me, I’m pretty sure I levitated a few inches out of my seat. Funny because Kelly jokes about falling asleep with Yoga Nidra on my podcast. What can I say? Her voice lulled my subconscious mind along with my body to sleep as she talked about becoming aware of certain areas of the body.

The second round I attempted on the same plane ride a few moments later because well – it’s a long ride to Seattle from Milwaukee. This time with a little rest under my belt I went on a journey with Kelly through an entire body scan. Then I counted breaths and felt emotions fully. I don’t think I’ve been guided through feeling different emotions back to back. How each one felt in the body was fascinating and eye opening for me. Plus how you can switch quickly between each one when prompted – wild.
Because she chose happiness and joy for the theme of the session I was guided to feel joy and happiness and bring it into my body to round out the session. I’ve never stopped to really think about what happiness and joy exactly feel like. Have you? Being on a plane with no distractions is a great way to work on feeling the feels. Who cares what the person next to you thinks… share your experience with them! Sleeping to channeling joyous feelings all in the matter of a four hour flight is a trip!
I need to bring Yoga Nidra with me for each plane ride as there’s something about not being reachable that provokes deep relaxation in my nervous system. I digress… Being one who likes a guided meditation I’d highly recommend testing out Yoga Nidra and seeing if it resonates with you. If time is a factor – Kelly notes you only need 8-10 minutes a day to tap into your subconscious mind.
