I had no idea the fabric of my pillowcase could be messing with my hair, skin and a cool night’s sleep till I interviewed Sadya Barletta from Menopriva.

Seems like every celebrity has a silk pillowcase or eye pillow to show off these days.

Thing is – I thought it was a fashion trend…

turns out there are health benefits to silk.

Not just any silk – Mulberry silk.

According to the pillowcase gurus (mostly dermatologists…interesting🤔)…satin and blends are not as effective for acne and skin cooling as silk.

Lucky for you I stole my sister-in-law’s Kitsch satin pillow while on vacation to see what I thought.

Both are rumored to reduce bed head and frizzy hair but the Mulberry silk has the most data for peri-menopause and beyond symptoms.

Mulberry silk comes from the cocoons of silkworms that exclusively eat leaves from the mulberry.

Silk is a fiber while satin is a weave of silk, polyester and sometimes nylon or even cotton or rayon.

Slip pillowcase company claims their clinical study showed their silk pillowcase creates about 43% less friction against hair and skin compared to cotton and satin.

Plus Slip absorbs less face cream compared to standard cotton pillowcases.

Mulberry silk products all have the potential to live up to the following benefits…

  • temperature regulating
  • decreased friction
  • non-absorbent to keep more product on your face
  • breathable and moisture wicking to keep you cool overnight
  • decreased knots and breakage of hair especially for fine hair or kinky curls
  • less irritation for sensitive skin

Pillowcases can run $20-180 per pillowcase.

The price variance is based on weight of the fiber instead of thread count.

For example: 19 momme is more cost effective while 30 momme is the most expensive.

Lighter weight pillowcases are softer but less durable.

Gurus recommend one that’s 20+ momme to get the best all around pillowcase for hair, skin and cooling effects.

Kardashians, Tom Brady and Selena Gomez are fans of Shhh Silk – 22 momme that runs $180 a pillowcase while Menopriva’s same weight pillowcase is $65 euro – a little over $70 USD.

Clearly there’s a lot price variance in the industry, I’ll leave decisions up to you there!

So what did I think of the satin pillow?

I can’t deny the soft and smooth feel and my post nap hair was not frizzy.

Great for someone who naps and needs to be camera ready quickly (clearly not me).

I can see the benefit if you have thin hair or are struggling with hair loss or breakage.

Truth is I’d like to try a pure silk pillowcase for comparison.

I’d opt for the higher end products myself like Slip or Menopriva’s line.

Speaking of the company Menopriva…

…a company that specializes in essential oils, teas and silk products to counter the symptoms of perimenopause and beyond.

A new Lightweight, minimalist trainer for natural movement in the modern world.

Sadya swears the silk products are the icing on the cake when it comes to ultimate comfort and protection of the hair.

Turns out Sadya was losing a lot of hair when she entered peri-menopause and she believes the silk scrunchies and pillows helped her immensely.

Listen in to my podcast with Sadya for more on her story -😄HERE.

I know so many women complain about their hair changing during this time and it makes me wonder if perhaps there may be something to the Mulberry Silk….

and then there’s the temperature component – could it help prevent neck up sweating at certain times of the month or with night sweats?

Perhaps a cold splash of water or an ice cube on the face and neck before bed and a silk pillow are just what the doctor ordered…

…pair that with Menopriva’s Cool or Sleep Tea and who knows you may just get the best sleep ever.

Stay tuned I’ll be trying it out for real – just wanted to put it out there that with all the hype as I was curious and likely you are too!

Or maybe you’ve tried silk pillows out – hit reply – let me know what you think!

Here’s to your health,
