From first glance the bathroom stall looked normal, until I opened the door.

Where I expected a toilet there was a hole in the concrete.

I figured this stall was broken so I went to the next one.

Same thing behind door #2.

Considering I was in rural Turkey I suspected either the bathroom was broken or someone stole the toilets so I went out to find my friends.

I asked if they’d seen a sign that said the bathrooms were out of order.

Sensing the joke was on me from their inability to contain their laughter I turned and watched a few women go in the bathoom.

This is when I learned there never were toilets – that’s how things are in certain areas of Turkey.

After that road trip I had a new respect for barbell squats and the strength I’d built in my legs.

As the years have passed I can assure you many gas station bathrooms have reinforced why I maintain my leg strength.

Same goes for keeping up the rest of my body strength as I’m a fan of packing my big black Chrome backpack heavy for my adventures and avoiding checking bags.

Since this bag has been rumored to be as big as me, I have to stay strong to not tip over when I pack it to the gills.

Being strong is about being free to adventure without limitations.

It’s also my investment in myself to do whatever I can to stay out of a nursing home because I never had kids.
