I was sipping on an iced tea at the Red Canoe Cafe in St. Germain Wisconsin last Saturday when I heard a cute blonde kiddo ask his Dad…
…”why do we call bathrooms restrooms when you can’t rest in them?”
Genius kid.
I wanted to give him a high five and tell him to never lose his inquisitiveness!
Adults suck at resting to take care of their nervous systems.
In the early 1900’s upscale restaurants, stores and offices were designed with chairs and couches in the bathrooms.
There’s still evidence of this in a few Macy’s or Nordstrom’s stores…
…where you can find folks scrolling on social media while waiting for a friend to finish up in the toilet.
Or it’s been transformed into a playroom with kiddos running all over while Mom is barking orders to stay put from the toilet.
Do people ever rest in these chairs and not multitask?
Likely not.
I understand why…who wants to rest in a place where sinks are flowing, toilets are flushing and if someone leaves a stinky deposit…
…well I’m not trying to hang out.
Great concept but more separation between the rooms and a spa-like feel would be ideal.
Perhaps I missed my calling as an upscale commercial bathroom designer!
Some Kimpton hotels have this down.

If you’ve seen me dancing on Instagram – I have a theme with Kimpton bathrooms.
The music draws me in but I linger because it’s aesthetically pleasing.
Does lingering longer in a bathroom help your nervous system?
I like to think so.
Of course as long as your stay isn’t prolonged because you had to hunt down the automatic water or soap dispenser that worked while you swore someone was behind the mirror laughing at you…
… or the paper towels weren’t out and you had to fan your hands dry.
Not soothing to the nervous system.
While I’m not saying you have to hunt down the best restrooms in your area… (well you could it’s kind of fun)

…I’m saying how could you mimic a little rest after hitting up the bathroom?
You have to go during the day – why not take a few minutes to relax – off the phone for a few minutes?
By the end of the day you’d have at least a few minutes built up of nervous system chilling time – enough to keep cortisol from running high all day!
I’m a huge fan of habit stacking and this one isn’t that hard to do.
What do you say?
Take a little extra time to rest around your bathroom breaks!
Here’s to your nervous system health,
