Chances are you don’t need medication or a cozy vacation at an asylum.

But there are a few things to assess to help get things back on track…

  • low estrogen can provoke tears over spilled coffee
  • elevated estrogen can invoke a feeling in general of everything in life sucking
  • low progesterone can have you filing for divorce over a significant other forgetting to buy chocolate, planning a solo vacation on a deserted island and letting words slip by your lips that you’d never dare to say a decade ago (this could be why grandma had no filter).
  • blood sugar is off – picking fights, yelling at family and people asking you “have you eaten?”
  • low serotonin – happens when estrogen is low – feeling like a dark cloud is hanging over you and you just can’t seem to find anything that gives you joy
  • low dopamine – a result of low protein intake and subsequent vitamin B6 deficiency – you’re non-functional without caffeine and lack motivation to do anything but hunt down snacks.
  • low testosterone – someone cuts you off driving and you’re irritable and anxious and looking to hide out in a cave the rest of the day. 
  • elevated cortisol – anxious, irritable, worry, fearful and irrational borderline paranoid thoughts

If you Google doctor “hormone imbalance” you’ll find pretty much every emotion, feeling and mood is possible when the hormones are off. 

So how do you know what’s really off?

Track your entire month – even if you don’t have a period anymore. 

Log when symptoms show up and see if there’s a link to the new or full moon.

Most women either have their period show up or ovulate near those times. 

Long after the period has stopped you still cycle and there are patterns you can identify.

Knowing when your symptoms show up can help you to plan ahead and target when to take herbs, amino acids or hormones.

I know I’ve said and done some irrational things when my hormones were way off. 

You don’t have to live a life of apologies for what you said or how you behaved.

Learn what’s off and work to put things in check. 

My favorite hormone balancing tricks that don’t require taking hormones…

  1. Seed Cycling 
  2. L-theanine 200-400 mg up to 4 times a day to lower cortisol and calm anxiety
  3. Evening primrose oil or Vitex (Chaste Berry) – 1000 mg with dinner to increase progesterone
  4. Maca – Femenessence Brand – twice daily to balance hormones
  5. Black Cohosh, red clover, sage or motherwort – to help support estrogen naturally
  6. Tryptophan + tyrosine – amino acid precursors to serotonin and dopamine (you can eat more protein to get the aminos naturally too)
  7. B Complex with at least 500 mcg of methylB12, 30 mg of B6 (Pyridoxal-5-Phosphate form), 400 mcg of methyl folate.
  8. Vitamin D – 2000 – 5000 IU a day
  9. Keep your protein in check 25- 30 grams with each meal as a base amount
  10. Hydration + electrolytes (sodium, potassium and vitamin C are key – see Adrenal Cocktail Jigsaw Health)
